Why Sierra Nevada is the coolest ski resort in Spain

There can’t be many places (in the world) where you can go skiing in the morning and be on the beach soaking up the sunshine in the afternoon. We can think of only one: Sierra Nevada, Europe’s most southernmost ski resort located a couple of hours from Spain’s sun-drenched Costa del Sol

No need to choose between sea or ski breaks

When booking a holiday, there is often a disagreement about the type of trip; one person may want to ski and the other may want to sunbathe on the beach. One person usually gives in and accommodates their partner, family’s or friend’s wishes.

Now imagine a friction free trip, where everyone gets to do what they want… those who want to ski can do so, and those who want to sail, swim or sunbathe can indulge without feeling guilty. When you buy an apartment on the Costa del Sol (or any other type of property, be it a luxury villa in Marbellaluxury villa in Marbella or new apartment in Estepona), the close proximity to Sierra Nevada ski resort, allows you the option to enjoy both a sea and sand and ski holiday, virtually at the same time.

Where is Sierra Nevada?

Located only two hours’ drive from Málaga (168kms), Sierra Nevada is one of Spain’s 33 ski resorts and one of the most popular destinations during the winter season. Driving from the Costa del Sol is no problem, the roads approaching Sierra Nevada are easily accessed. Alternatively, if you fancy taking the train, the nearest station is Granada (40kms).

The resort is ideal for a day trip, long weekend or even longer, with family or friends, as there is an activity, ski track or trail suitable for all levels of competency and ages.

Sierra Nevada has two ski mountaineering itineraries which involve climbing the mountains in order to ascend on your skis. There is El Aguila (5,062 kms) which begins by the Virgin de las Nieves chairlift, via Cauchiles, towards the iconic 3,392 Veleta Peak. The other is Monebajo (4030kms) which starts at the Al-Andalus gondola lift, past Loma de Dilar and the Solayr Snowpark.

There is a program of activities including a snow rollercoaster with bumps and banks, sleds, magic carpets, bike skiing, donuts, slides and snowmobile sleigh rides. There are other experiences that will keep even the most active kids happy, including ice skating, trampolines and other child friendly activities.

Where to stay in Sierra Nevada

There is a great choice of hotels in Sierra Nevada ranging from basic to 5-star establishments just a few steps from the ski lift. Alternatively, even in winter the weather is temperate in southern Spain, so there is always the option of taking advantage of one of the many campsites or ‘glamp’ sites like Kampaoh in the local vicinity of Granada and the ski slopes.

Then once you have experienced the exhilaration of the ski slopes and aprés ski atmosphere, you’ll be back in no time on the Costa del Sol to enjoy the sun, sand and sea!
