Autumn adventures: Cool things to do on the Costa del Sol

Whether you are relaxing in your Marbella property or keeping cool in your penthouse pool in Fuengirola, enjoying a lazy summer on the Costa del Sol, it is a lifestyle that many people aspire to, yet relatively few get to experience. The autumn months are equally highly anticipated, as the sizzling hot sunshine is replaced by lower temperatures and fresher air, which means you can emerge from your conditioned comfort, ready to get out and about again.

If you don’t yet own Costa del Sol property but want to find a property, be it La Mairena, El Higueron or Mabella real estate, why not plan a trip in time to take advantage of the area’s wonderful landscapes, activities and superb amenities that can be enjoyed throughout autumn.

To give you an idea of just how diverse and colourful the Costa del Sol really is, here are our a few of favourite autumn activities:

1. Get into the swing of golf

The Costa del Sol is a magnet for golfers who enjoy the sport and the social life. Those lucky enough to own golf properties, can wake up to stunning views across the undulating greens, and often with the Mediterranean Sea glistening in the distance. Experienced golfers know, that unless you’re up at the crack of dawn during summer, it is simply too hot. However, when the heat of mid-summer has subsided, the Costa del Sol becomes a golfers’ paradise.

For this reason, autumn is also the time of year when social events, including dinners, parties and tournaments (professional and amateur) are held, allowing you to participate or to simply soak up the atmosphere and enjoy yourself. And with more than 70 golf courses along the Costa del Sol, including big names like Santa Maria Golf & Country Club, Golf Torrequebrada and the world-famous Real Club Valderrama, you are bound to find a course that ticks all of your boxes. Information about how to sign up for tournaments can be found by contacting the Andalusian Golf Federation.

2. Enjoy the great outdoors

Where to start is a little tricky, as there are some many stunning landscapes and coastlines in the corner of southern Spain, so we’ve narrowed it down to three invigorating and exciting landscapes to explore:

  • Sierra de las Nieves National Park: This is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Sierra de las Nieves Mountain range, located above Marbella and close to the famous inland town of Ronda (which is definitely worth a visit too!). The scenery of dramatic mountain ranges and deep valleys is spectacular and there are plenty of hiking, running and cycling trails.
  • Caminito del Rey: If you have a head for heights and hankering for adventure, then you could traverse the world-famous path attached to the side of a gorge above the Guadalhorce River. This will either be one of the most terrifying or exhilarating experiences of your life – depending on your perspective!
  • Sierra de Mijas Nature Park: This limestone mountain range is located above Mijas Pueblo and over looking the coastline of Mijas Costa. It is considered to be one of the most important green belt areas on the Costa del Sol, and is home to an incredible array of flora and fauna, making it a favourite amongst hikers who can brush past the fragrant thyme, lavender, fennel and much more. Twitchers, can also marvel at the eagles and kestrels that inhabit the forests. Picos de Mijas is the highest peak in the mountains which offers the best views across the coastline. More Information about the main hiking routes can be found here

3. Discover nearby attractions

The Costa del Sol may be famous for its beaches but there is a whole other world of white villages, charming towns and majestic cities in Andalucía, which can be easily discovered on a day trip.

Most people have heard of Ronda, Granada, Gibraltar and even Tangier in Morocco, but you may not realise that they are so easily accessible. And now that the heat has faded, it is the best time to take a trip.

Whether you prefer the comradery of a cost-effective coast trip and organised tour, a taxi, limo or you fancy taking control by driving yourself, it is possible to enjoy these wonderful destinations by day and be back on the Costa del Sol in the same night. Imagine exploring the rich history of the Alhambra in Granada or taking a tour down the famous New Bridge spanning the gorge in Ronda, or perhaps experience the cheeky Barbary Apes first-hand on a trip to Gibraltar. If you prefer something a little more exotic, there is the option to head gown to Algeciras to catch a ferry to Tangiers in Morocco, where you can do you own thing or join an organised tour.

Information about each of these destinations can be found here:

4. Feria de Fuengirola (6th to 12th October)

Last but not least, every town and village on the Costa del Sol celebrates its patron saint with a feria, and Fuengirola’s is one of the biggest and most important. The Feria del Rosario has grown bigger every year, offering a packed culture, tradition, spirituality and also a lot of fun!

Residents and visitors look forward to the impressive firework display that heralds the start of the festival, and streets will be flooded with crowds of people waiting to see the procession, a tribute to the city’s patron saint, Virgen del Rosario Coronada.

Throughout the week, there will be plenty of different events and activities both night and day. Children can enjoy the fairground with rides and merry-go-rounds and there are colourful casetas with bars, music and food. At night there is plenty of music and dancing. Other events include a display of horse-drawn carriages and prizes given for the best horses.

A Flamenco Mass in the Constitution Square provides a highly spiritual and majestic element, with many of the congregation wearing flamenco dresses. Heavenly music is provided by the Royal Brotherhood of Rocio, followed by a procession, also accompanied by music from the brotherhoods.

These are just some of the highlights, amongst the many choirs, dance troops and other artists who perform throughout the feria. Nearer the time you’ll be able to get the full programme from Fuengirola’s Town Council.
