There are many factors to take into account when considering buying a home, whether this is Costa del Sol property or elsewhere in the world. The weather plays a large part when considering buying a new home or an investment property, as does the location, transport links, infrastructure, the economy and also the calibre of available property for sale. Costa del Sol literally means sunshine coast, which is why this beautiful sundrenched corner of Spain is often at the top of potential buyers’ wish lists.
However, there are many different cities, towns and villages, each with a superb choice of properties for sale; Fuengirola, El Higueron and Torremolinos located on the eastern side of the coast spring to mind, as do Marbella, Estepona and Benahavís (collectively known as the Golden Triangle) on the western flank. However, there are also some beautiful locations right at the heart of the Costa del Sol, for example the pretty traditional white village, Mijas Pueblo, part of the wider municipality of Mijas.
If you are considering looking for the perfect property for sale on the Costa del Sol but aren’t yet sure which area would be most suitable, Weber Estates can help you. Here are some of the reasons that we feel you should consider making Mijas your new Spanish home.
Firstly, it’s important to explain that Mijas is a large municipality that covers over 14 kilometres of coastline and spans a total of 148 square kilometres. The large municipality has two distinct characters: the lively coastal area of Mijas Costa and the inland traditional village of Mijas Pueblo.
Mijas Costa begins at El Faro (Fuengirola) and ends at Cabo Pino (Marbella) and has a wonderful 6km promenade. La Cala de Mijas is arguably the best-known resort on Mijas Costa, popular amongst buyers looking for beachside property for sale in Mijas Costa close to beach clubs, restaurants, bars and of course Blue Flag beaches.
The inland village Mijas Pueblo is a typical traditional white village located 20 minutes from the coast in the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas Mountain range. Originally a small mountain village, Mijas Pueblo still retains a sense of authenticity, and original Andalusian architecture of picturesque white properties lining narrow streets and pretty plazas. However, it’s close proximity to the coast has had an impact upon its personality, attracting a large artistic community. In the late 1960s, it was declared to be an historic and artistic site by the Spanish Ministerio de Cultura.
Mijas Pueblo’s elevated, inland position allows access to some of the Costa del Sol’s most impressive panoramic views, particularly from the Parque la Muralla vantage point. Above the town, there are numerous hiking trails and cycle routes throughout the beautiful abundant countryside and of course fresh mountain air.
Of course, you don’t have to head for Mijas Costa to experience a lively party atmosphere. Every year, Mijas Pueblo holds a number of events, including the Mijas Blues Night Festival, Flamenco Festival and our particular favourite, the Mijas Festival del Queso y El Vino (coming up in October!), which sees cheese and wine merchants display their products in the village plaza.
Not far from Mijas Pueblo, there are some smaller satellite villages, of which Valtocado nestling on the southern slope of the Mijas Mountains is the most popular. Secluded and sparsely populated (around 1,906 inhabitants), the village is perfect for those interested in the more exclusive Mijas properties, as there is a limited number of villas and small residential developments. Valtocado offers a taste of the authentic Andalusian lifestyle without the hustle and bustle of the beach or a busy town. Yet, when the mood takes you, Valtocado is close enough (4kms from Mijas Pueblo) for easy access to Mijas Pueblo and Mijas Costa, and offers excellent sea views.
The Costa del Sol could have been designed for sports enthusiasts, blessed with the weather, superb landscapes, fresh air and unbeatable views. However, there is one sport which is synonymous with the region, which is Golf!
The municipality of Mijas sits at the heart of the ‘Costa del Golf’, as the coastline is affectionately known, and is renowned for the quality of its golf courses, making it a great option if you are interested in golf properties. La Cala Golf, Calanova, El Chaparral, Miraflores and Santana Golf, offer players the choice of different levels of difficulty, undulating greens, stunning water features and incredible views. Those who don’t enjoy teeing off, can enjoy the high-quality facilities of the club house, restaurants and terraces.
Competition amongst potential buyers to secure the best Mijas properties is fierce. This is particularly true for luxury residences located in Mijas Pueblo, and above-mentioned rural village of Valtocado, Entrérros and Osunillas, which appeal to Weber Estates’ Danish team and international clientele.
